Heat Recovery System

Heat Recovery on a CO2 installation. A snapshot of one of our latest projects.

Case Study

At the top of everyone’s list when looking at investing in new refrigeration equipment is energy efficient and environmentally friendly – ‘green energy’. This snapshot of one of our latest projects ticks both those boxes and a whole lot more.

On this site, we have installed co2 refrigeration equipment at both medium and low temperatures. When designed and installed properly, co2 is a very efficient refrigerant, not to mention being environmentally friendly with a GWP of 1. To increase energy efficiencies on this project we have also introduced a heat recovery system. This system essentially takes the waste product from the refrigeration cycle (the heat) and re-uses it throughout the rest of the building.

The basic process is as follows: The co2 discharge gas rejects heat into a glycol system via 2 high-pressure plate heat exchangers. The glycol is heated to 50 C and is stored in a stainless-steel insulated vessel. The warm glycol is used to supply the under-floor heating circuit, which is below the freezer floor, this keeps the area at 8 C and prevents frost heave. We also use glycol to defrost the evaporators in the freezer and the chilled area. On this site there is a banana room, so the glycol is used to keep this room at 12 C. The heat recovery also supplies warm water to the wash hand basins in the changing rooms and toilets.

By using the rejected heat to heat the glycol, we can save electricity without the necessity of an electric heater mat. Also, the evaporators do not require electric defrost elements as we pump the glycol through the evaporators to defrost them. So, in essence, we are using the waste product of the heat recovery process to make significant savings in electricity costs.

Not only do we design, supply, and install this CO2 and heat recovery system, but we can also provide a maintenance team which can support you to maintain the equipment’s efficiency and performance throughout its lifespan.

Testimonials The Flower Bowl

Here at the flower bowl, we have a state of the art co2 refrigeration system. This system is integral to our business, when there’s a fault with it many of the services we provide are unable to continue. Since the system was installed it has had various technical issues. After lots of back and forth, we decided to go out and see if another company would be able to help us diagnose and rectify these issues. Along came DD Cooling who came highly recommended. Over time they have been able to get the system operating fully and make it reliable, this hasn’t been an easy task. It has been time-consuming and I’m sure head-scratching at times. Now the system has been made reliable they continue to service and maintain the equipment to an excellent standard.
